So we’re all getting the news of Alex Chilton’s death.  This is some seriously heartbreaking news; I can’t remember a musician’s passing having affected me more.  I’m gutted.  Condolences to his family & his friends & to anyone who has been inspired, changed by this amazing man.  I first heard Big Star when I was 13, luckily enough, and that music — those three incredible inimitable records — was part of what carried me through my teens and has been a constant companion ever since.  Back before you had the luxury of being able to carry your entire music collection with you wherever you went, I lived that Replacements lyric: Big Star’s “Third” always accompanied me wherever I went.  I don’t know that there’s a record I’ve listened to more than “Third.”  And it has revealed new and beautiful things to me on every listen.  That record — and certainly the two that preceded it — these are works of real genius, real slovenly beautiful genius from an artist with one of the most original and vibrant and dynamic voices the world has ever kicked into existence.  And the world is a little emptier without him.

I was in a great mood tonight till i found this news out. He changed my life. I will never forget him.
